What’s this book about:
This book provides an extensive overview of performance management in agile teams, contrasting it with traditional performance reviews. It highlights the differences in applying agile methods across various industries and the unique characteristics of agile teams and their members, emphasizing the increased importance of soft skills—like communication, collaboration, thinking, and creativity. It also explains why traditional performance review methods can slow down agile transformation—because they focus on numbers, not on how teams achieve those numbers. As a result, teams often choose the shortcut: working harder instead of working smarter.
Based on this, the book points out the specific needs of agile performance management: how to take important qualitative factors into consideration in performance measurement, and how to recognize them in a company’s performance review system so that teams and individuals can develop the right skills and capabilities to boost their agile maturity.
The book advocates for principles like empowerment, transparency, continuous improvement, diverse incentives, and localized scoring. Furthermore, it explores the practical application of OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) within agile team performance management, detailing their formulation, tracking, and common pitfalls. It also discusses the use of 360-degree feedback, KPIs, and balanced scorecards in this context.
The book offers a framework that combines different performance review methods (KPI, OKR, 360-degree feedback, and balanced scorecards) to fit different industries and stages of company development. It also provides a checklist for companies to refer to, helping them choose the right combination for their context and guiding teams to improve their agility.
The book is currently available only in Chinese. If your organization is interested in translating and distributing it, I’d be happy to connect—just drop me a note at foxcamel@gmail.com
